Wood fabrication is a crucial part of my artistic practice that I continue to develop through “hands on” experience. I began  to explore this medium in 1998 while building a canoe rack from trees cut down to make room for power lines. In 2000 I gained further experience in basic framing working for Bogie Construction.

In college my wood shop professor  Stan Krzyzanowski, fostered a new dimension of appreciation for working with wood right down to the flow of the grain. With his direction and help I immersed myself in an intense working study of bowl shaping using a lathe. The second memorable project involved a transformation of a large tree branch into a one inch thick lamp stand, which retained the core shape of the branch.

Working for MCM 2001 Inc, I began learning about furniture design and execution while gaining experience in different fabrication processes. Specifically I worked on projects that built different types of display units for art museums and commercial businesses.

Currently, my main focus in woodwork is on designing unique frames and building functional and portable art display units. My most recent project was a portable gallery space “Portage Gallery” which toured throughout Eastern Canada and was later installed in New York City as part of a Methinks Presents: We Made A Deal With The Devil, art and music tour.

My approach to creating art is multidimensional and it includes consideration of the space around the work.  In the past three years, framing has evolved through observation and experimentation. It now includes a series of successful executions in custom designed  frames for other artists as well as myself. I believe that the right frame grounds the work making it resonate with the audience in a greater extent. Overall framing is a very rewarding creative outlet in my artistic practice.
