SIO

I grew up in Gdynia, Poland which is a city located close to the Baltic Sea. Since relocating to Canada in my early teens, I have been continuously redefining assumptions of identity, belief and knowledge while improving my skills and abilities in order to communicate ideas through art.
While attending the Ontario College or Art & Design and Majoring in Drawing & Painting, I came across Japanese Zen, Jungian and Eastern philosophies as well as theories on the development of identity in infants in relation to how that shapes our adult self. This had a widespread impact on the direction my creative practice would take in the coming years. Mid-way through my studies, I completed a year and a half drawing meditation known as “The Infernal Machine” which focused on concepts of nothingness, chaos and love. This led to my formation of my artistic identity “Split-Into-One” (Sio) and a creative approach “Dodalism”. Sio refers to the notion that separate even opposing forces make up the whole while Dodalism channels creativity into a physical manifestation by focusing on the action of “doing”.
Currently I am working with the theme of reality as a fluid mass of individual parts always changing and moving. I am interested in creating work which expresses the idea of oneness, the concept that all things are interconnected contributing to a greater whole.
I believe in the limitless potential for art to manifest itself in terms of space, materials and audience. It is the process of communicating ideas through art and their reception which fascinates and drives me. I am always looking for imaginative ways of reaching and engaging people creatively with the intention of triggering discussion and critical thought.
